Clarivate has published the 2026 edition of the Journal Citation Reports (JCR). This latest edition includes metrics for 22,643 journals across 254 categories. It also includes 521 journals receiving an impact factor for the first time, from 47 countries/regions. According to Clarivate, the 2026 edition is based on a number of recent improvements aimed at optimizing consistency, transparency, and inclusiveness in journal evaluation.
Of particular note is the gradual expansion of Open Access (OA), with a 6% increase, from 6,320 Gold Open Access journals in 2024 to 6,703. The majority of Gold OA journals belong to the categories of Education and Educational Research, Public, Environmental, and Occupational Health, and General and Internal Medicine.
As an improvement in this 2026 edition, journals that lack an Impact Factor (IF) due to insufficient data for its calculation, and which were previously included in a later update, now appear in the index with the note "Coming Soon." In these cases, the journal displays metrics from the previous Journal Citation Reports (JCR).
