It is impossible to ignore its imposing figure: the Social Sciences Library of the University of Valencia crowns the Tarongers Campus, standing out from above like a fortress of knowledge.
Surrounded by a moat that is crossed by a walkway, it projects its façade onto those who enter its impressive hall, symbolising the transition towards a space of knowledge and learning. Both the building and the foyer have been the subject of numerous reports in architectural magazines.
The entrance hall acts as a central nucleus from which the different spaces of the library are distributed, facilitating the fluid circulation of the people who enter it.
This project began as an idea in 1990 and was developed over the years 1996-1998 by the architects Giorgio Grassi and Manuel Portaceli, becoming a landmark building in 20th century Valencian architecture. It was inaugurated in 1999, when Pedro Ruiz Torres was rector of the University, and the vice-rector in charge of supervising its construction was the professor of Pharmacology Francisco J. Morales Olivas. Blanca Llopis Carles took over the management of the new library, and continued to run it until 2021. After her retirement, José Miguel Gallego Jiménez took over these tasks until March 2024. Amelia López Martínez is currently in charge of the library. Its name honours the memory of Gregori Maians i Siscar, an illustrious Valencian scholar, philologist, historian and librarian of the 18th century, known for his vast knowledge and his role in promoting culture and science in his time. We cannot cross the threshold of its main entrance without being overwhelmed by its symmetries and its pure and clear lines, its infinite ceilings and its diaphanous spaces. Over the years, the library has established itself as a fundamental resource for the academic community, adapting to changing needs and becoming a benchmark in the field of university libraries. Its extensive collection of specialised resources in law, economics, sociology, political science, social work, and education, among other social science disciplines, is matched only by its willingness to serve. Whether considered a fortress of knowledge or a cathedral of knowledge, the essence of this library and its staff lies in their commitment to providing access to all necessary resources and creating a welcoming and functional environment. Designed to make everyone feel welcome and supported, the library is dedicated to ensuring that everyone finds the knowledge and comfort they seek. |
