Within the historical collections preserved in the Library, there is an important coin collection made up of the different contributions by notable Valencian persons, among which we highlight the bequests by Borrull and Mariano Liñán.

1806 was a very important year for the coin collection of the University because of the discovery of the treasure of Roman denarii in Llíria.

The treasure was found when the sanctuary of San Miguel de Llíria was being remodelled. The collection of denarii, which spans the period 214 to 43 BC, was inventoried by Francisco Javier Borrull in the Catálogo de las monedas romanas que se han hallado en la villa de Liria el día 31 de octubre (Catalogue of the Roman coins that have been found in Llíria on 31 October). The treasure, along with Borrull’s manuscript with the complete catalogue, was incorporated into the coin collection of the University.

The coin collection comprises around 10,000 coins and 400 medallions, including very rare items, some of Valencian, Roman, Visigothic, Arab and Spanish-Christian origin.

The University received more pieces on 11 September 1845 thanks to the bequest by Mr. Narciso Aparici. Merelo and other collectors also bequeathed several pieces to the University of Valencia.

The bequest by Mr. Narciso Aparici also contained 40 rings, 2 medallions, 34 cameos and15 pieces of minor nature.
These collections have been the subject of several studies by people such as Rafael Arroyo, Pere Pau Ripollés or Carmen Alfaro Giner.
