Mariano Esteban Gil (Valencia, 29/07/1904 - Valencia, 1977)
Doctor specialising in digestive pathology. He studied medicine at the University of Valencia, graduating in 1927. After completing his doctorate, he fulfilled his training in the digestive diseases service of the Valdecilla Health Centre in Santander, with the prestigious surgeon Abilio García Barón, in addition to stays in Paris, in the Salpetrière, Hôtel Dieu and Vaugirard hospitals.
On his return to Valencia, he won a position as a doctor in the Municipal Charity Corps and worked for years as a practical class assistant in the Department of Medical Pathology, until 1956, when he was appointed head of the Gastroenterology Service of the Municipal Polyclinic Institute of Valencia and became a member of the Municipal Health Board. Subsequently, he was Head of the Digestive Department of the Provincial Hospital of Valencia.
In addition to his work and teaching activity, he wrote articles for different medical journals, both Valencian and national, with outstanding contributions to the study of sideremia in digestive diseases and the electrophoresis of gastric juice.
He was also president of the Valencian Society of Digestive Pathology between 1964 and 1966, founding member of the Spanish Association of Hepatology, honorary member of the Valencian Medical Institute and member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Valencia, where he was admitted on 5 December 1972, with the speech Antecedentes islámicos de la bromatología del país (Islamic antecedents of the country's bromatology).
Donation
In 2018, the family of Dr. Mariano Esteban Gil donated his bibliographic and archival material to the Biblioteca Historicomédica "Vicent Peset Llorca".
This donation is made up of around 500 records, mainly books on digestive pathology and other medical subjects, dating from the beginning of the 20th century to the year of his death. In addition to these there are also other archival materials related to his work (notes, plates, photographs, drafts of articles...).
