Picture of Pelegrí Casanova Ciurana

(Valencia 1849-1919)

Pelegrí Casanova Ciurana studied medicine in Valencia and earned his doctorate in Madrid. He was professor of Anatomy at the University of Valencia.

His work and publications covered various fields of medicine. His most well-known work was on Morphology.

He was a student of Ernst Haeckel. He participated prominently in the homage that Medicine students of Valencia paid to Darwin in 1909, to mark the anniversary of his birth.

Faithful follower of Darwin and rigorous evolutionist, he had a great influence in turning Valencia into the peninsular centre for the dissemination of evolutionism.

His radical positions on these issues earned him the hostility of conservative environments, practically forcing him to take refuge in teaching and practising of otolaryngology, especially otology.
