The spread of infections caused by bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics is one of the most serious threats to public health. The rise of antibiotic resistance is due to a number of factors, but the inappropriate and indiscriminate use of antibiotics is one of the main contributors to the emergence of antibiotic resistance. This is a global problem affecting both human and animal health. Recent studies reveal that antimicrobial resistance has become one of the leading causes of death worldwide, ahead of diseases such as HIV/AIDS and malaria. In Europe, around 33,000 people die each year as a result of hospital-acquired infections caused by resistant bacteria. In Spain, there are around 4,000 deaths yearly, four times as many deaths as those caused by traffic accidents.
