‘La Nau dels bojos. Una odissea de la desraó’, published by the Publications Service of the Universitat de València (PUV), has been awarded the Joan Lluís Vives award to the 2023 university edition which grants the Xarxa Vives d’Universitats. ‘La Nau dels bojos’ analyses the dialectical relation between insanity and society in the more than six centuries since the foundation of the asylum built in Valencia in 1409.

The aim of the Joan Lluís Vives awards is to make known the role of university publishing in the transfer of knowledge, as well as to point out the value of the work that the university publishing services and houses develop. Furthermore, they promote the prestige of their own language in the university environment in order to encourage and standardise its use in the dissemination of knowledge. The awards have four categories: Best Edition, Best Interxarxa Co-publication, Best Science and Technology Book, and Best Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities Book.

The award was collected by the vice-rector of Culture and Society, Ester Alba, and by the director of PUV, Teresa Ferrer.

La Nau dels bojos obtained the award for the Best Edition category. The first part of the work studies the period related to the first two centres, the Hospital de Inocentes and the General Hospital, a period of almost five hundred years in which the mentally ill remained in the same urban location. The second focuses on the contemporary period, which begins at the end of the 19th century with the asylum of Jesús, as a preliminary step to the opening of the psychiatric hospital of Bétera, also conceived from the marginal concentration, which would soon be outdated when the new community intervention policies that are currently applied were imposed.
