Owing to the coronavirus pandemic and the quarantine to prevent the spread of the virus, the Valencian Association of the Pharmacy Students (AVESFA) and the Faculty of Pharmacy organised the 10th edition of the National and the 8th edition of the International Pharmacy Student Congress online.

The 10th National and the 8th International Pharmacy Student Congress opened on Tuesday, 28 April, with the words of the Principal of the Universitat de València, M. Vicenta Mestre; the dean of the Faculty of PharmacyJuan Carlos Moltó; and the director of the congress, Virginia Yeves.

The principal, M. Vicenta Mestre, expressed her gratitude to the students for inviting her and giving her the possibility to have a word at the congress. She also congratulated everyone on this initiative and the efforts put into organising it, especially, given this complicated and difficult situation. She affirmed that “this congress is surely a success, and you will see the expected results of your work and study.”

The dean Juan Carlos Moltó reminded of the current difficulties to hold a congress now but encouraged the organising committee saying that they “will gain a very valuable experience this way”. “Various professionals that participate in the congress come from different areas of pharmaceutical studies, contributing with their multiple views to the field and enriching it,” pointed out Moltó.

Given the difficulty of the current situation, we didn’t want to cancel the congress and, instead, decided to hold it online,” noted the director Virginia Yeves. Yeves also outlined that “all efforts will be rewarded, and in the future, we will be very proud of overcoming this pandemic and holding this congress despite the sudden difficulties.”

The 10th edition of the Pharmacy Student Congress is organised by AVESFA and the Faculty of Pharmacy and is held on 28, 29, and 30 April from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. About 150-200 students are estimated to participate in the congress; the majority of them study at the UV Faculty of Pharmacy. With the help of talks and workshops, the congress aims to show the students the possible career paths related to the degree in Pharmacy, the importance of teamwork, and the role of a pharmacist in multidisciplinary teams. As such, the workshops will elicit new areas like bioinformatics and its relation with the world of pharmaceutics, genotype, and the popularisation of science and proper diet.
