“Ruling the city. Mayors and local power in Valencia (1958-1979)” is a book written by Juan Carlos Colomer. The Principal of the Universitat de València, Maria Vicenta Mestre; the Major of Valencia, Joan Ribó; and the former majors of the city, Ricard Pérez Casado and Fernando Martínez Castellano; will be gathered on Wednesday 9 of May at 7 p.m. in the Main Hall of the Cultural Centre La Nau due to the content of the book.

The book sets out an historical tour of the city linked to the tasks conducted by the governments of the Francoist representatives that ruled it in the last years of the regime.

Using unpublished documentation, the book reconstructs the biography and the main milestones of the municipal work of Miguel Ramón Izquierdo, Vicente López Rosat or Adolfo Rincón de Arellano. What led them to take certain decisions that have shaped the history of the city in subsequent eras? What was their role in the transition towards democracy? How were relationships with their fellow citizens?

Ruling the city became a priority for Francoism in aspects such as urbanism, the increasing importance of neighbourhood associations or the management of celebrations and civic commemorations. A political task that, thanks to this book, will allow us to understand the long duration of the dictatorship and the social bases on which it was settled.
