Ángel Corberán, professor in the University of Valencia until his retirement last year, has received a medal from the Spanish Society of Statistics and Operations Research (SEIO for its acronym in Spanish), for its “relevant scientific contribution” to this discipline. Corberán has been pioneer in Spain in research about combinatory optimisation, routes and localisation. The award ceremony took place in Madrid this Wednesday, January 18th.

The SEIO, which currently has 700 members, has also awarded the 2022 medal to Ricardo Cao. The society was created in 1962, and every year they hold an award ceremony for research projects where they award a maximum of two medals.

According to the record of the jury, Ángel Corberán’s medal is based on his scientific trajectory that is “pioneer in Spain in operational research, focused on the problems of combinatory optimisation and net design, and in particular the issues of vehicle routes, in which he has been an international reference, contributing relevantly and continuously to the scientific advance of the operational research and his international projection”.

Likewise, the jury highlights his leadership in the creation of research groups and “paving the way for so many researchers in the operational research field, which have favoured the development of uninterrupted collaborations in the area of operational research in the heart of the SEIO”. And adds: “Along his extended career he has promoted first level international connections, with leadership positions of international societies.”

Ángel Corberán has been a professor in the Department of Statistics and Operational Research of the University of Valencia up until his retirement last year. In the University he has had several leadership positions.
