The Serenates poster was created as a graphic design project by Ignacio Carrera, a student at the College of Art and Design of Valencia (EASD). He said that he enjoyed ‘raising awareness’ of women in art history through Clotilde, Joaquín Sorolla’s wife and the protagonist of the project.
Ignacio Carrera explains that Clotilde was an invisibilised woman in art, like many others: ‘She was Sorolla’s muse, the mother of his children, the administrator of his work and his sponsor, and she proves than although she was key to her husband’s artistic development, there’s no information about her life.’
‘The painting Clotilde in the window (orig. Clotilde en la ventana) is the main concept of the project, as she is looks through the window as if she were singing a serenade. The project also includes the dansà, a traditional Valencian dance, represented by a diagram of its basic steps so that everyone can learn it’, adds Carrera.
The student sums up the poster by saying that ‘the serenades are represented as music, the diagram as a dance, the Serenates Festival as a window from which to observe this culture, and Clotilde as a recognition of the female figure in art.’ This project was tutored by Professor Víctor Ballester.
‘Working in the Serenates project was an amazing experience, especially because I was able to contribute artistically to the awareness of the female figure in art, and to see the final result on paper, posters, flyers and many other adaptations, on the screen and in the streets’, he concluded.
Ignacio Carrera is a fourth year graphic design student at the EASD. He is also a dancer and intends to combine both artistic disciplines in the future. He is currently working on his Undergraduate Degree Final Project in both fields.
In the field of design, he has also participated in the visual design of the ERALOVE Performance in a famous Valencian club, a fashion show with a performance about love stories and relationships in the present day.
