On the occasion of the Lantern Festival, that its celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month of the Chinese calendar, the Confucius Institute of the Universitat de València (ICUV) has put the finishing touch to the activities to celebrate the Chinese New Year 2022-4720. The traditional lanterns workshop for children and young people has allowed them to learn about the traditions of this important date and to make a lantern to decorate their houses. The assistants received a personalized calendar with their name phonetically transcribed in to Chinese as a present.

In China this festival, which coincides with the first full moon after the beginning of the Chinese New Year, closes the celebration period. There are different traditions during the festival, for example, hanging red lanterns with riddles, giant colourful lanterns lanterns in different shapes and colours, which in some places like the Yu Yuan garden in Shanghai, are a real spectacle. Regarding the gastronomy the glutinous rice ball soup, also known as tang yuan, is a must, representing the unity of the family, which is the central focus of this festival.

This year the ICUV will celebrate its 15 anniversary since its foundation “al servicio de la sociedad” (in the service of society) as their slogan says. It is the official centre for the Chinese certification exams and was assigned as model of the 540 Confucius Institutes of the world by the head office in China in 2015. More than 5,000 students have passed through its classrooms. In 2017 it received the Distinción al Mérito Cultural (Distinction of Cultural Merit) of the Generalitat "for serving as a bridge between Chinese and Valencian cultures".
