The Confucius Institute of the Universitat de València (ICUV) held its traditional 'Puente Chino’ contest on Saturday afternoon, for secondary school, university and amateur students. The contest, with a long history of nearly two decades since its inception, has been held in Valencia without interruption for 11 years. This edition, and with exceptional character due to the situation of the state of alarm, has been carried out in online format through the video conference platform Zoom.

This competition, in which the knowledge learned by the ICUV students during the course is valued, consists of three stages. In the first one they make a speech in Chinese about the contest's slogans which, in this 2020, have been "One world, one family" and "Learn Chinese flies high". In the second stage, they answer a questionnaire about Chinese language and culture and, in the third stage, they carry out an artistic exhibition that they previously sent by video.

This year's gala, which was held in front of fifty people who connected to Zoom using their mobile devices, had Alba Loriente, in the secondary school student category, and María López, in the university student category, as its first two winners. The prize for each one of them consists of a free annual course at the ICUV for the 2020-21 fiscal year and their participation, likewise, in the Chinese Bridge Competition in Spain to be held next Sunday, June 14, also in the online mode by the aforementioned platform. The rest of the participants, up to almost ten, have also won a gift pack that will be given to them at the ICUV headquarters, in the Faculty of Philology, Translation and Communication, from September.

During the course of the competition, which took place without any technical incidents and in a very cordial atmosphere, the director of the ICUV, Professor Vicente Andreu, highlighted "the adaptation that our Confucius Institute has had, which has converted all its teaching into an online format, and I am sincerely grateful for the great interest of the students in participating in this competition in such exceptional conditions". The director Andreu also thanked the attendance to the gala of directors of Confucius Institutes from Latin America, such as José Salazar, from Ecuador; Lai Sai Acón Chan, from Costa Rica; or Norberto Consani, from Buenos Aires. The jury of the competition, made up of the faculty of the ICUV, also thanked those who participated and highlighted "the excellent linguistic and academic level of all," in the words of the Chinese director of the ICUV, Professor Gao Hongbo.

The ‘Puente Chino’ Competition initiative is organized worldwide, at the initiative of Hanban, the headquarters of the Confucian Institutes. This year, the 19th edition will be held in the university category and the 13th in the high school category. Those who win in each country have the opportunity to participate in the world contest that is organized every year in a different Chinese city. The Confucius Institute of the Universitat de València is considered a Model Confucius Institute, among the 525 that exist worldwide and was distinguished, with the 9 d'Octubre award from the Generalitat, for Cultural Merit, in 2017.
