From 21 to 23 May, the Fòrum de Debats of the Office of the Vice-principal for Culture of the University will open the 8th Sessions of Democratic Memory in the Cultural Centre La Nau. Several specialists will gather in the Main Hall for three days at 7 p.m. to vindicate the memory of the victims of the Spanish Civil War and the Francoist Regime. Entrance is free and limited due to room capacity.

On Monday 21 of May, Susana Koska’s book “Mujeres en pie de guerra” (Ediciones B) will be presented. The actress, writer and documentary director vindicates the role of women in the Second Republic and the Spanish Civil War. She also denounces the “large loss of rights” that the war resulted for them.

The book was initially a documentary that Koska directed in 2004. It will be presented by Alfons Cervera, who is a writer, journalist and the coordinator of Fòrum de Debats. After its success, the director decided to write it as a book. “Mujeres en pie de guerra” gives voice to 12 women, most of them Catalan and Basque, who lived the war and sets a chronology of events starting in 1936.

Alongside the writer of the book, the historian Mélanie Ibáñez, of the History Room and Democratic Memory of the Universitat de València, will contextualize the historical context that Susana Koska studies in her book. Koska will also participate in the sessions of 22 and 23 May.

On 22 and 23 May, the sessions will assemble families and association who have fought and fight for the exhumation of victims buried in graves. The first panel of discussion is entitled “Las fosas de la vergüenza” and will collect several testimonies in an event led by Matías Alonso, of the Historical Memory Recovery Group.

On Wednesday 23 of May, a talk will gather the archaeologist Miguel Mezquida, the delegate of democratic memory themes, Rosa Pérez Garijo; and Juan Luis Porcar, a member of the Historical Memory Recovery Group of Castellón. The event will be presented by Alfons Cervera.
