Hervé Falciani takes part in conference on social responsibility of financial institutions

Hervé Falciani, the French-Italian computer expert who leaked a list of 120.000 tax evaders linked to HSBC in Ginebra in which he worked, will give a conference in the University of Valencia on 18 October. The conference will be part of the IV Congress on Social Responsibility and Economy for the Common Good in Financial Institutions.

The conferences will also include the Guide for Ethic Finances, Cooperatives and Socials of the Valencian Community which has been coordinated by Professor Joan Ramón Sanchis Palacio, chair of the Chair for Common Good of the University of Valencia.

Once again, the last September the National Court refused to extradite Falciani to Switzerland, a country which demands him to spend five year in jail for a supposed crime of “worsen financial spying”, which does not appear in the Spanish penal code. In December 2008, Falciani got hold of the information of 120.000 clients of HSBC which had been used in several cases of fiscal offences. He then put this information in the hands of justice and French tax entities. His contribution made recovery of more than 250 million euros hidden to Treasury possible.

In his conference, which will be held in the hall of Gregori Maians library in Tarongers campus, Falciani will speak about security, responsibility and respect in the legality of digital finances. He will also present his anti-fraud project applied to cryptocurrency. Now a worldwide icon in the fight against financial fraud, he currently works as an advisor in strategic projects and he is present of Tactical Whistleblower (Taboow.org).

Edited by the University of Valencia, the Guide for Ethic Finances, Socials and Location in the Valencian Community will be presented throughout the conference. It collects detailed information regarding banking institutions which work with ethic values and social and environmental criteria in the Valencian Community. “With this guide”, explains Professor Sanchis Palacio, “the intention is to favour the exchange and direct relationship between Valencian society and these entities, boosting the responsible financial consume”.

The Conference will be inaugurated at 9:30 by Mª Dolors Real, vice-rector of Innovation and Transference in the University of Valencia; Josep Ochoa Monzó, general director of Social Responsibility and Self-government Encouragement of the Generalitat Valenciana; and Francisco Álvarez, general director of Economy, Entrepreneurship and Cooperativism in the Generalitat Valenciana. After the presentation of the Professor Sanchis Palacios’ book and the conference of Falcini, University of Alacant Professor Carlos Gómez will present “The collapse of microcredits in the cooperation for development”. Following this, there will be a round table on “RSE in banking and Economy for the Common Good” in which representatives of entities such as RSE and RRHH Ethics Heritage, Xarxa Enclau, Banca Armada and the Association of Credit and Caixa Rural Central Cooperatives. Lastly, the closing ceremony will be formed by José Manuel Pastor, dean of the Faculty of Economy in the University of Valencia, María Amigo, president of the Valencian Assiciation for the Promotion of Economy for Common Good, and Joan Ramón Sanchis Palacio, director of the Chair for Common Good of the University of Valencia.
