Two new film series in the schedule of the Cinema Club of the Universitat de València in June. A journey through the best horror films of the silent era to star the schedule of Principal Peset Hall of Residence, while Cerveró Palace hosts a film series about poisoning. And ‘Cinema in Valencian’ shows ‘Irrational Man’ by Woody Allen in Benimaclet.

As usual in the programming of the Cinema Club, projections will be in original version with subtitles, with presentation, colloquium and free entry.

Poisons, victims and criminals
Cinema has always been an excellent sample of human misery and weakness, which are expressed through crime in all its forms. Among all, poison is one of the most persistent forms, given that it is hard to detect and does not leave trace.

The first showing of the film series in Cerveró Palace takes place on Thursday 2 June, consisting of the projection of the film ‘The Two Mrs. Carrolls’ (Peter Godfrey, 1947). Humphrey Bogart plays Geoffrey Carrol, a painter in the midst of a crisis, who has recently widowed and married Barbara Stanwyck. But shortly after, suspicions that his first wife could have been poisoned, and that the new one might follow the same path started.

David Lean, an important British film-maker, directed ‘Madeleine’ (1950), a story with melodrama and class conflict nuances between a rich heir and her fight for the love of a working class’ young man. But poison is present in the most unexpected way. The film will be shown on Thursday 9 June.

Finally, the film series comes to an end on Thursday 16 June with the projection of another classic film named ‘A Blueprint for Murder’ by Andrew L. Stone (1953). The character who is played by Joseph Cotten suspects that his sister-in-law is a murderer who poisons to death her own family.

Silent by horror
Among all the cinematographic genres, horror is probably the one that needs fewer words to express. Fear can be originated -or even suggested- through an image, a particular camera angle, a melody that sounds in the right time.

The film series starts on Tuesday 7 June with the projection of the film ‘Häxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages’ (Häxan, 1922), an essential film that set the bases of Nordic (and European) horror films. Danish Benjamin Christensen directs this pioneer film, which runs through the history of witchcraft from the distant pagan past until the start of 20th century. An horrific repertoire of devils, ghosts and monsters that keep shuddering us until today.

‘The Phantom of the Opera’ (Rupert Julian, 1925) is likely to be the most known and interesting adaptation of all Gaston Leroux’ works. The film will be shown on Tuesday 14 June.

On Tuesday 21, attention will be given to ‘A Daughter of Destiny’ (Alraune, 1928), a barely known film directed by Austrian Henrik Galeen, who depicts the figure of a mad doctor obsessed with genetic testing and his insane attempt to create life from crime and infamy.

Finally, the closing act of the film series and the academic year in the Principal Peset will take place on Tuesday 28 June with the projection of the movie ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ (La chute de la maison Usher, 1928). This film melds the literary brilliance of Edgar Allan Poe with the revolutionary visual imagery of Jean Epstein resulting in a disturbing and unwholesome film,  capable of giving goosebumps even a century after its release.
