Gonzalo Abellán and José Jaime Baldoví, both researchers at the Institute of Molecular Science (ICMol) of the University of Valencia, have been recognised by the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry (RSEQ) with one of the 2025 Research Excellence Awards and the Young Researcher Award in the ‘Group Leader’ category, respectively. The decision was announced on 30 April 2025 following its approval by the RSEQ General Assembly, based on the recommendation submitted by the jury at its meeting the previous day.

Gonzalo Abellán Sáez, leader of the 2D-Chem research group at ICMol and senior lecturer at the University of Valencia, has received one of the 2025 Research Excellence Awards. This recognition highlights his outstanding scientific career in the development of new two-dimensional materials and their impact in the field of molecular chemistry.

In addition to his research at ICMol, Abellán is co-founder and chief technology officer of Matteco, a spin-off from the University of Valencia focused on the development of sustainable technological solutions. He is also co-founder and former president of ACCENT, the Association of Scientists of Excellence of the GenT Plan, through which he has driven initiatives to make research talent visible and strengthen the scientific community associated with this strategic programme.

The Research Excellence Award is one of the most important distinctions awarded by the RSEQ and its award to Gonzalo Abellán further consolidates ICMol’s position as a leading centre for cutting-edge research in molecular materials and nanoscience.

José Jaime Baldoví Jachán is a distinguished researcher under the GenT Plan (Valencian Government) and head of the 2D Smart Materials group at ICMol, as well as teaching staff and researcher in the Department of Physical Chemistry at the University of Valencia. He is also the current president of the ACCENT association and a full member of the Young Academy of Spain. He is currently leading an ERC Starting Grant project and represents Spain in the Management Committee of the COST Action SuperQumap.

His research focuses on developing theoretical and computational frameworks for the chemical design of smart molecular and two-dimensional devices for information technologies. This work integrates physics, chemistry and materials science to explore emerging applications in fields such as magnonics, spintronics, quantum computing and sensing devices.

The 2025 Young Researcher Award in the ‘Group Leader’ category recognises excellence in the creation and consolidation of emerging research groups in the field of chemistry by young Spanish scientists.
