Ismael Mingarro is elected as the new dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences

Ismael Mingarro has been elected as dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences of the Universitat de València. He replaces full-time university professor M. Carmen Bañó, whose two mandates have already expired. Mingarro obtained 18 votes in favour, 14 blank votes and 5 abstentions.

The new team lead by the dean includes Carmen Agustín Pavón as vice-dean of International Relations, Mar Ferrer Suay as vice-dean of Quality and Innovation, Eduardo García Roger as vice-dean of Studies, Francisco Pérez Sánchez as vice-dean of Infrastructures and Mª Jesús García Murria as secretary of the faculty.

Ismael Mingarro graduated in Biology (specialising in Biochemistry) in 1989 and graduated as doctor in Biochemistry in 1994 in the Universitat de València. He did postdoctoral studies at the Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies (San Diego, 1994) and at the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the University of Stockholm, European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) Fellow (1995-1997). He has been associate professor from 1999 to 2011 and has been full-time university professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology since 2011 at the Universitat de València, visiting professor at Texas A&M University (TAMU, 2009) and at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF, 2022).

He has headed the Membrane Protein Laboratory (https://research.uv.es/membrana/) since 1999 and is responsible for national and regional projects and R&D contracts. He has supervised 12 doctoral theses, four of which have been awarded special doctoral prizes. He is also an evaluator of research projects and programmes for different national and international agencies and author of more than 90 scientific publications in prestigious journals and two patent filings. He also carries out an intense dissemination activity collaborating with the Scientific Culture Unit of the Universitat de València.

Mingarro has been academic secretary (2015-2019) and vice-director (2019-2022) of the Doctoral School of the Universitat de València and member of the board of directors of the Spanish Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SEBBM, 2016-2020) in charge of the management of scientific groups and consul of the SEBBM in Valencia (2020-present). He is currently a member of the Deputy Commission of Vocalía 3 (Life and Health Sciences) of the Confederation of Spanish Scientific Societies (COSCE) (2021-present), and has been secretary of the Science Committee of the University Quality Agency of the Balearic Islands (AQUIB) for the accreditation of university teaching staff (2020-2022).

He has also received the Laboratorios SALVAT Inquifarma (2000) and the Spanish Biophysics Society (2022) awards.
