The masterclass of the historian and art and literature critic will take place this Tuesday, 12 March, at the Faculty of Geography and History at 18:00. The activity is part of the Culture on Campus programme of the Office of the Vice-Principal for Culture and Society.

The Faculty of Geography and History holds the masterclass entitled ‘Exhibition curatorship: A personal experience’ next Tuesday, 12 March by historian Juan Manuel Bonet. It is organised by the department of Art History of the Faculty, the Martínez Guerricabeitia Collection and the General Foundation of the UV.

Considered one of Spain’s leading experts on contemporary painting, Juan Manuel Bonet has a long career as an exhibition curator and a museum student. Among his main occupations in this professional field, he has worked as director of the Valencian Institute of Modern Art (IVAM) and the National Art Centre Museum Reina Sofía of Madrid.

Based on his personal experience, Bonet will introduce the audience to a discipline that, besides planning, organising and coordinating the implementation of artistic exhibitions, requires multifaceted professionals with extensive training and knowledge of the artistic and cultural-historical field, as well as management skills. It is a professional profile that, based on their own individual vision, builds a coherent and meaningful exhibition discourse, connecting the different works and pieces and giving meaning to the exhibition context to create a meaningful experience for the visiting public.

Ever since he first worked as a museum student at the Spanish Museum of Abstract Art of Cuenca in the late sixties, Juan Manuel Bonet has curated several exhibitions and retrospectives. He is currently the curator of the exhibition of the Martínez Guerricabeitia Collection of the Universitat de València 'Libertad, libertad. La década de los 70 en la Colección Martínez Guerricabeitia: La política y más allá’ (Freedom, freedom. The 1970s in the Martínez Guerricabeitia Collection: Politics and beyond). Based on a selection of 57 works from the collection, he pays his personal tribute to the married couple, Jesús Martínez Guerricabeitia and Carmen García Merchante, with whom he has been linked since 1994.

The event will take place in the GH 1.2 classroom of the Faculty of Geography and History, at 18:00. Attendance is open and free of charge, until full capacity is reached. Organised in collaboration with the Faculty of Geography and History of the UV and the Town Council of Culture of the Valencia City Council, it is part of the Culture on Campus programme promoted by the Office of the Vice-Principal for Culture and Society.
