The 21st class of La Nau Gran (2019-2023), the education programme of the Universitat de València for people over 55 in the university campuses, received their diplomas in a ceremony celebrated on 28 November in La Nau. A total of 273 students have obtained the required credits for receiving the diplomas in La Nau Gran. It is one of the most long-lasting university programmes for older adults, as it has been offered for more than two decades. The programme is also among the ones that bring together more quantity of students in each edition.

La Nau Gran programme, managed by the personnel of the University Culture Service, allows older adults to access the Universitat de València as students and to share classes and subjects with the rest of students that study regulated degrees. Whilst they do not obtain an official degree title, the students of La Nau Gran belong to the real university environment and actively participate in the knowledge, culture, research and university debate. This methodology, which allows the university students over 55 to coexist with younger students, is one of the singularities of this Universitat de València’s programme. The studies of this current class that received their diplomas were interrupted due to COVID-19 pandemics.

The university programme La Nau Gran is comprised, in one of its modalities, of nine different pathways (of three mandatory academic years each), taught on the three campuses of the Universitat de València. The students can study History; History of Art; Society and Territory; Philosophy; Psychology; Language, Literature and Communication; Health Sciences; Law, Political Science and Criminology; and Science and Technology.

The diplomas were handed out at 12:00 in the Paraninfo (Main Hall). The ceremony included the speeches of the Vice-Principal for Culture and Society of the Universitat de València, Ester Alba; the delegate of the Principal for University-Society programmes, María Dolores Pitarch; the sponsor of the promotion and coordinator of the Language, Literature and Communication pathway, Rafael Roca; and the defender of older adults in the Valencia City Council, Asunción Pérez. The class was represented by Asunción Martorell, student of the Higher Education course in Psychology in Adults. Besides the students, coordinators and teachers of different pathways also attended the ceremony.

The current offer of the programme includes nine different pathways, of three mandatory academic years each. Students can access pathways such as History of Art, Health Sciences, Science and Technology or Law, Political Science and Criminology. They can also study three Higher Education courses: Thought and Culture in Classical Antiquity (ANLCA), Psychology in Adults and History of Spain. Additionally, there is a broad offer of monographic courses that address all the branches of knowledge. It is worth mentioning that the very first class of Psychology in Adults was presented with their diplomas during this event.

The ceremony was concluded with a performance of the La Nau Gran chorus, which performed the university anthem Gaudeamos Igitur.
