This Monday the Cultural Centre La Nau of the Universitat de València hosts the presentation of the book ‘Queríamos un Calatrava. Viajes arquitectónicos por la seducción y el repudio’, by Llàtzer Moix at 19:00h. The ceremony, which will take place at Aula Magna, will also count on the participation of the book author, the Vice-Principal for Culture and Equality, Antonio Ariño and the journalist Salva Enguix.

‘Queríamos un Calatrava. Viajes arquitectónicos por la seducción y el repudio’ (Anagrama, 2016) tries to figure out, describe in detail and explain the transformation carried out in twenty countries in which the works of Santiago Calatrava are displayed. Calatrava is the most famous Spanish architect in the world.

With this aim, Llàtzer Moix has visited some of his principal works in Athens, Malmö, Milwaukee, New York, Venice and Zurich as well as in some Spanish cities such as Barcelona and Valencia. And he has also talked with his clients, collaborators of the architect who developed his projects, users and other experts. In this investigation, there are some drawbakcs: delays, exorbitant budgets, retirements on the go, strenous maintenance, several incidents and, in the end, clients who initially admired the architect but now repudiate him. There have been even some trials againts him. In the book it is emphasised that Calatrava is a particular and talented architect, as it has been reflected in his first works and comments of some colleagues. Nevertheless, his architecture presented as a dream has shown in some occasions that it is in fact a nightmare.

Llàtzer Moix (Sabadell, 1955) was the people in charge of the cultural information of ‘La Vanguardia’ during twenty years. ‘La Vanguardia’ is a Catalan newspaper in which Llàtzer is now the subdirector, leader writer, columnist and architecture critic. Among his books, it is important to highlight the following: ‘La ciudad de los arquitectos’ (1994), a classical text about the urban and architectonic transformation of Barcelona during the Olympiads; and also ‘Arquitectura milagrosa’ (2010), where he described the iconic architecture mania in Spain after the opening of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. He is also author of other volumes of cultural journalism, as in the case of ‘Mariscal’ (1992), ‘Wilt soy yo’ (2002) or ‘Mundo Mendoza’ (2006).
