La Nau of the Universitat de València hosts the First Conference on Cinema and Law tomorrow

From tomorrow, Thursday 15 February, until Friday 16 February, the First Conference on Cinema and Law and will be held at the La Nau Cultural Centre of the Universitat de València, which will explore the insertion of the seventh art and the legal system. Organised by Editorial Tirant lo Blanch and the Chair for Ibero-American Legal Studies, with the collaboration of the Universitat de València, the meeting will take place within the framework of the editorial collection 'Cinema and Law', a collection awarded the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts.

This conferences will explore the different perspectives and reflections on the mutual impact of these two disciplines, with the help of professional filmmakers and leading figures from the legal academic fields.

At 09:30, the Vice-principal for Culture and Society, Ester Alba, will inaugurate the meeting, along with the coordinator of the conference, Full Professor of the Universitat de València, Beatriz Gallardo Paúls. This will be followed by the inaugural conference, which will be given by the former Minister of Culture and film director, Ángeles González Sinde, who will take part in a conversation on the interrelationship between cinema, law, and life, moderated by the filmmaker Irene de Lucas and the co-director of the Editorial Collection 'Cinema and Law', Fernando Flores.

The first day, the depth of the collection ‘Cinema and Law’ will be addressed from the perspective of human rights. Key works such as ‘Los derechos de la infancia’, ‘La Fábrica y la Oficina’, ‘Derechos, Cine, Literatura y Cómics’, or ‘La guerra contra el terrorismo, veinte años después’ will be analysed.

In the afternoon, authors of the collection ‘Cinema and Law’ will discuss works that address feminists topics, such as ‘La costilla de Adán’, by Juan Miguel Company and Ignacio Cort, and ‘El acusado’, by Ana Valero, as well as other relevant works such as ‘La voz más alta’, by José Luis Espinosa, ‘Vania en la Calle 42. Mérito y Decepción’, by Jesús García Cívico, and ‘La guerra a la vuelta de la esquina’, by Chiara Vitucci, who will delve into her experience and coverage of the Yugoslav wars.

The second day will be dedicated to examine the relation between cinema and law from a legal perspective Salvador Vives, director of Tirant lo Blanch, will moderate a panel with the participation of leading figures from the legal field, such as the magistrates of the Supreme Court, Ana Ferrer García and Luis María Díez Picazo, and full-time university professors of Constitutional Law and Procedural Law, Miguel Ángel Presno Linera and Jordi Nieva Fenoll, respectively.

The series of conferences will continue to address how cinema has defined jurist vocation of leading figures from the legal field, including full-time university professors of Constitutional Law Rosario Serra Cristóbal and Javier de Lucas, public prosecutor specialised in gender violence, Suana Gisbert Grifo and full-time university professor of Criminal Law, José Luis González Cussac.
