The cultural centre La Nau of the Universitat de València joins the tributes that are taking place this year, and will hold, next 6 November at 7:00 pm, an event in honour of the Uruguayan poet Mario Benedetti on the occasion of the centenary of his birth. The homage is being organised by the AJUPENURE (Asociación de jubilados y pensionistas uruguayos residentes en España), an association devoted to help Uruguayan retirees and pensioners who are living in Spain, within the framework of the Debate Forum of the Office of the Vice-Principal for Culture of the Universitat de València. This year is also special because of the relationship that the poet held with the Universitat: it has been 20 years since Mario Benedetti visited La Nau. He attended to a recital with Daniel Vigletti which counted on the presence of a large number of organisers.

The event, that will take place in Matilde Salvador Hall, will be broadcast live through the channel MediaUni of the Universitat de València via this link. Those who want to attend in person may do so by registering in advance. As tickets are free and very limited due to the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19, please register by emailing ajupenuredireccion@gmail.com only if you are sure you can attend.

The event will begin with speeches of the Uruguayan Consul in Valencia, Alberto Rodríguez Goñi; the Territorial Director of the Presidency of the Valencian government, Francisco Molina; the deputy Vice-President and Minister, Rubén Martínez Dalmau; the Deputy Mayor of the Valencia City Council, Sergi Campillo, and the Director of the University Culture Service, Ester Alba.

Next, Hortensia Campanella, president of the Mario Benedetti Foundation, will take part online to hold a lecture on the poet's life and work. Campanella has a degree in Philosophy and Literature and she has worked as a cultural journalist and literary critic in several national and international media. In addition, she ran the Spanish Cultural Centre in Montevideo and in Santiago de Chile, and she is one of the greatest experts in Benedetti's extensive work.

In the third part, a drawing project about one of the most universal poets will be explained; some of his most famous poems will be recited and the Chilean artist Lucho Roa will offer a guitar recital. The tribute will conclude with a live dramatization directed by Carla Chillida, one of the founders of the company 'A tiro hecho'. Through drama, Benedetti's imaginary, Montevideo, his verses and words will close an homage to one of the most beloved writers of Latin America who has accompanied generations all over the world.
