“I have a great concern: who is the owner of Big Data or massive data storage that are collected everywhere, from private life, mobility, process control, logistics, etc.? In this way, the German engineer Leo Lorenz has claimed this Friday when joining in the Universitat de València as new doctor ‘honoris causa’. “Big Data is synonymous with political power”, he has also stated.

Some doctorate extraordinary awards of the 2015/2016 academic year have been presented during the ceremony. The event has been taken place at Paranimf of the historic building of La Nau. Check out he prize-winners.

Leo Lorenz has expressed:” All industrial nations fight for a leadership position in this field. In the next decade, we will see more clearly who will have the opportunity to become the technological leader of the fourth industrial revolution”. The new doctor ‘honoris causa’ has added: “Due to the large industrial history of Germany, there’s a danger of not being capable of convincing the society quickly enough of the benefits of the digital revolution. We have to be aware that the fourth industrial revolution will be the most important challenge for the industrialised countries and new actors will gain the first place. For this reason, all great industrialised nations in this day and age fight for the industrial leadership. As in the case of United States, Japan and Europe, apart from new actors such as China and Korea”. See the full lectio.

In his ‘laudatio’, the full university professor of electronic engineering of the Universitat de València Enrique Dede García-Santamaría has emphasised how ‘the translation of knowledge related to research in terms of usable forms for industrial purposes and highly motivated teams, has allowed doctor Lorenz to carry out a productive research work. This work is reflected in more than 50 European and international patents and also in more than 400 publications in seven international journals and presentations in conferences. In the majority of them, he was the speaker of the key presentations”. He has also highlighted his initiative of promoting the international platforms for knowledge transfer”.

The principal, Esteban Morcillo, has said that doctor Leo Lorenz is a “renowned scientist, a qualified professional and a committed man” (full speech). According to what the Principal has said, “because of his several merits, he deserves the title that has been presented today: his academic career as engineer and doctor of engineering, his research work, collected in more than fifty patents and 400 publications define a career that has been recognised with several awards and international recognitions”.

After the doctor extraordinary awards ceremony has finished, in the final part of the event, the Principal of the Univeristy, Esteban Morcillo, has interrupted his speech because he was indisposed. So, the academic ceremony came to an end ahead of schedule, missing his speech and the performance of the Orfeó Universitari.

The Principal has been attended by the medical personnel of the Universitat de València, as well as by other doctors of Medicine. He has suffered a light fainting but he has recovered few minutes later without the requirement of an additional medical treatment.
