The López Piñero Inter-University Institute of the Universitat de València, in its role as a centre for the dissemination of science, has multiplied its online activities these days. Thus, within the framework of the cycle 'Public Health, Communication and History: The challenges of a pandemic' the centre has organised four conferences for 20, 26 and 27 May and for 10 June.

On Wednesday 20 May at 6 pm, the experts Josep Lluís Barona, Professor of History of Science at the Universitat de València and member of the López Piñero Institute; Ildefonso Hernández, Full professor at the Universidad Miguel Hernández and former Director General of Public Health of the Spanish Government (2008-2011); and Enrique Perdiguero, Full professor of History of Science at the Universidad Miguel Hernández and member of the López Piñero Institute, will talk about 'The lessons of the pandemic’.

You can follow the debate by clicking here.

On Tuesday 26 May, at 5.30 p.m., there will be a talk on 'Pandemics before the coronavirus. Three historical visions'. The talk will be held through the Webex platform.

Participants will include María José Báguena, professor of History of Science at the Universitat de València and researcher at the Instituto López Piñero (IILP); Enrique Perdiguero, full professor of History of Science at the Universidad Miguel Hernández (UMH) and director of the IILP headquarters at the aforementioned university; and Carmel Ferragud, professor of History of Science at the Universitat de València and researcher at the IILP.

This meeting is aimed at teachers from the CTEM area and students from the fourth year of ESO and Bachillerato. This meeting is conceived as a round table in which two researchers and a researcher will talk about some pandemics prior to COVID-19: the Black Death in the Middle Ages, the Spanish Flu in 1918, HIV/AIDS and emerging diseases in recent decades, from SARS to Ebola. Aspects of citizen interest will be dealt with: causes, physical and psychological impact on people, rumours and false information, economic consequences and the progress of science. These sessions are designed for Science, Technology or Mathematics (CTEM) teachers to participate with a group of their students. To this end, each teacher may select up to 10 students to participate. Teachers interested in participating with their students should send an email to ctem.mate@gva.es.

On Wednesday 27 May at 6 p.m., the seminar 'From Conspiracy Theories to Magical Ingredients' will be held. Disinformation in the time of the Covid-19'.

The participants are Carolina Moreno, full professor of Journalism at the University of Valencia and coordinator of the research team Science Flow; and Alicia de Lara, professor of Journalism at the UMH and editor of the magazine UMH Sapiens, the two professors of the Inter-University Master's Degree in History of Science and Scientific Communication (UV-UMH-UA).

The seminar can be followed by clicking here.

And on Wednesday 10 June at 4 pm, the seminar will be organised on the subject of 'Ending Quarantines: Rethinking Protection against Epidemics in the Port of Lisbon (1901-1945)', with Celia Miralles, Doctor of History, researcher at the Inter-University Centre for the History of Science and Technology (CIUHCT) in Lisbon and member of the Quarantine Studies Network.

On the other hand, the López Piñero Inter-University Institute maintains the virtual exhibition on the 1918 Flu. Last year was the 100th anniversary of the 1918-19 flu pandemic. On this occasion, an exhibition was organized at the López Piñero Inter-University Institute by María Isabel Porras (Faculty of Medicine of Ciudad Real) and María José Báguena (López Piñero Inter-University Institute).

The curator of the Universitat de València's Medical History Museum, Josep Simón, has produced a virtual version of this exhibition on the flu pandemic of a century ago. The exhibition can be consulted aquí.

In the attached leaflet you can find much more information about the cycle, about the exhibition and about other initiatives related to the Covid-19.
