Luis Jimena Quesada, appointed Doctor Honoris Causa by the Universidad Nacional de la Plata

The Constitutional Law full university professor of the Universitat de València, Luis Jimena Quesada (Massamagrell, 1968), has been appointed ‘doctor honoris causa’ by the Universidad Nacional de la Plata (UNLP) in Argentina due to his academic and professional trajectory in defence of human rights. Jimena, who has already visited the UNLP in 1994, gave his investiture speech and the opening conference of the Master’s Degree in Human Rights. The topic was ‘The right of protection against poverty and social exclusion: speech against the inequitable legal arguments.’

The event took place on March 17 in Salón de los Espejos of the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences of the Argentinian academic institution. In the academic field, Luis Jimena was the first European doctor in Law in the Universitat de València. Since 1993 he has been teacher, studies director and secretary general of the International Institute of Human Rights found by the Nobel Peace Prize René Cassin. He has written dozens of books, several articles and chapters in national and international publications in different languages.

In the field of the legal praxis, he has been member and president of the European Committee of Social Rights (2009-2014); he was elected by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe for a five-year order as an independent figure (substitute) who represents this organization in front of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (until July 2020) and he is a substitute judge of the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community.

Among his recognitions, apart from the Doctorate special award and the Teaching Excellence Award (given by the Consell Social of the Universitat de València), he was also awarded with the honour Villa de Massamagrell by unanimity of the local corporation in 2008. He was the official herald of the main festivities of his hometown in 2016.
