‘La saviesa de transmissió aràbiga en la Mediterrània occidental’ is the title of a book written by professors Maria Conca and Josep Guia, which will be presented on Monday, 25 March, at 19:00, in the Rector Peset Hall of Residence of the Universitat de València. The book includes the study and edition of the first proverbial compilation of the Catalan language, comprised in an era of cultural splendour, the reign of Jaume II.

The book analyses the text and context of ‘Llibre de paraules i dits savis i filòsofs’, by Jafudà Bonsenyor (c. 1255-1331). Maria Conca and Josep Guia have created a critical edition following the classical guidelines for the edition of old texts, with the novelty of including a paremiological study of each and every one of the proverbs of the work.

The documentary contribution of concordant proverbs in translations of Arabic or Hebrew sapiential works, and located in other Latin and Romance texts, allows the formulation of hypotheses about the possible sources used by the author. Regarding Jafudà Bonsenyor, the biographical data is updated and completed, all while correcting mistakes that have been repeated through time, related to his life and the tradition of his work, including the medieval translation.

As for the context of the work, resulting from the Arabic transmission of Eastern wisdom produced during the time of Jaume II as king of Sicily (1285-1295) and of the continental dominions of the Casal de Barcelona (1291-1327), the close and productive cultural relationship between Sicily and Catalonia is exposed, and a relocation of the sapiential works of the time in the western Mediterranean is formulated.

The presentation will take place at 19:00, in the Sala de la Muralla of the Rector Peset Hall of Residence. In addition to the authors, Teresa Ferrer, director of the UV Publications Service, and Míriam Cabré, professor of the University of Girona will also participate.
