Art has always played an essential role in Mètode magazine. In fact, it is another element that contributes content and reflection to the articles it accompanies. In this way, the magazine tries to combine both cultures, the scientific and the humanistic, to break with the rigid separation that often prevents us from seeing reality in all its nuances. Throughout its editions, the magazine has collaborated with a multitude of artists who have illustrated the covers, articles, dossiers and monographs. These works have given the magazine an added value and allow us to approach science from a transversal point of view.

Mètode is also an open magazine that is committed to participation. That is why it is calling for artists to illustrate edition 115 of the publication, which is currently in preparation, and which is dedicated to the relation between beauty and nature. In a world where it seems more useful to go unnoticed, many living beings exhibit their beauty without complexes. We are surrounded by a diverse and breathtaking beauty that science has been trying to study and understand for years. Questions such as the evolutionary causes of beauty, common patterns such as symmetry or the pleasure of observing a suggestive object raise questions that science is trying to answer. It is also a field in which art has a promising space for reflection and undoubtedly interesting contributions.

Contest rules

1. Participants

All visual artists of legal age who want to participate may do it.

2. Topic

The proposed topic is the relation between beauty and nature.

3. Materials and techniques

The materials and technique are free. The works must take into account the dimensions of the magazine, and will therefore respect the proportion of the magazine. The size will be 21 cm wide x 28 cm high.

4. Presentation

Works must be sent in digital form (with a resolution of 300 dpi) by e-mail to metode@metode.cat until 15th July 2022.

Up to three works per artist will be accepted. The works must be identified with a short title and the artist's name. In the same email, the artist must provide his/her full name, email address and contact phone number, as well as a brief CV (maximum 120 words).

5. Selection

The jury will be made up of editorial and advisory team's members of Mètode magazine, which will make its verdict public in September 2022.

6. Awards

Winner work

It will illustrate the cover of the beauty and nature edition of Mètode magazine, scheduled for December 2022, and will receive a compensation of €500.

Second prizes

Moreover, up to five second prizes will be awarded to other works, which will be selected to illustrate the inside of the monograph. The artist of each of these works will receive a compensation of €150.

7. Conditions

The works submitted must be original works by the participants, not previously published in other digital or print media.

The information provided will be used solely for the purposes of managing the competition.

Participation in the competition implies express and full acceptance of these rules, as well as acceptance of the use of the winning works in the magazine Mètode under the conditions indicated.
