‘Serenates’ Festival

The festival ‘Serenates’ has taken place since the year 1984 and has registered an increase in the amount of concerts and audience this year. With a total of 15 concerts (11 in 2015) and more than 7.000 people in the audience, that is, 1.700 more than last year. The average assistance to all the spectacles of the cycle is 93,8%. The number of artists is 739 and an investment in youth stands out (more than 500 young musicians).

The “Serenates” festival is co-produced by Universitat de València and the directorate of Música de CulturArts, with the collaboration of the Valencia City Council, AVL, la Escuela de Arte y Superior de Diseño de Valencia, Bancaja Foundation and Sabadell Bank Foundation.

The idea of employing the Cloister of UV´s historical building as a setting for the Summer music festival has been a great success from the beginning. The festival´s programme is largely dedicated to music created and performed by Valencian musicians.

One of the most significant news has been the collaboration of ‘Serenates’ with the July Fair (thanks to the collaboration with the Festival and Popular Culture Department of Valencia City), with three popular concerts which took place in Patriarca Square this weekend.

The singer Silvia Pérez Cruz and the musician Jordi Savall have been two main artists of the festival ‘Serenates’ this year, which has had an extensive and eclectic programme: Capella de Ministrers, the Orquesta JJMM of the Universidad de León , the Orquestra Filharmònica of theUniversitat de València, the Orfeón Universitario, Lluís Vich Vocalis, Estilo Concertante, the young choir Leioa Kantika Koral from País Vasco, the Cor de la Generalitat Valenciana, the Valencia Oschestra, the Colectivo Mortero, Els Tornejants i la Muixeranga de Algemesí, Urbàlia Rurana i la Romàntica del Saladar and the la Joven Banda Sinfónica de la Federación de Sociedades Musicales de la Comunidad Valenciana (FSMCV) with the flamenco singer Pep Gimeno, ‘Botifarra’ to conclude the festival this weekend.

Throughout the years, many musical works have been performed at the festival, or have been rescued from centuries of oblivion in various musical archives in Valencia; what’s more, many Valencian bands have debuted in the festival, since the festival has become a platform for the promotion and circulation of one of the most treasured cultural values of Valencia: music.  The festival programme has been diverse with regard to musical genres: from Renaissance until contemporary and music band premieres.
