Executive coaching has multiple beneficial effects on the psychological well-being and quality of work life of business leaders. Effects include reducing their levels of stress, emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation at work (burnout), as well as increasing their productivity, linked to the clarity of their role or the perceived effectiveness of their work team on a day-to-day basis.

These are some of the conclusions of the study “Coaching de líderes hacia trayectorias favorables de agotamiento y compromiso“ (Coaching leaders towards favourable trajectories of burnout and commitment), which hasbeen presented today at the CEV headquarters in Valencia and which has been developed jointly by the Research Institute of Personnel Psychology, Organizational Development and Quality of Working Life (Idocal) and the Valencian consulting firm Intelema.

Methodology and results

The study, which has already been published in the scientific journal Frontiers in Psychology, was carried out using a longitudinal methodology in ten 1-hour sessions with 92 managers from different business sectors. Of these, 44 were part of a control group and 48 of them received the coaching intervention directly.

According to Marta Torres, co-founder of Intelema, the participants of the second group of the research "managed to increase their ability to develop new products or market opportunities, build an innovative environment, work under stress and initiate relationships with investors".

In terms of leadership competence, "managers who received the coaching intervention increased their level of intellectual stimulation and their degree of influence over their subordinates," said Pilar Jasmine Brooks, author of the article published in Frontiers and author of the Master's Degree in Human Resources Direction and Management of the Universitat de València. In this sense, "they also improved their social relationships, their degree of personal growth and their perception that they have a purpose in life", she added.

The executive coaching methodology that has been developed since 1997 by Intelema "has proven to have multiple beneficial effects on the psychological well-being and quality of work life of managers and executives", said Carmen Sánchez, CEO of Intelema.

A quite useful study for the business fabric with international projection

During the presentation of the study, Eva Blasco, president of the CEV in Valencia, has valued "the contribution it means for the Valencian business ecosystem that a study promoted from our land, by the Idocal of the UV and Intelema, has had a good result and an international projection, which will be very useful for the business fabric in the future".
