In the tribute, Antonio Ariño, vice-principal for Culture and Sport of the Universitat de València; Joan Monterde, dean of the Faculty of Mathematics; Juan Bisquet, director of the University Institute of Advanced Materials (INAM) of the Universitat Jaume I (UJI) of Castelló; and Marina Murillo, lecturer in Mathematical Analysis at the UJI.

Vicent Caselles, graduated at the Universitat de València, was a mathematician with a considerable influence and a great international appreciation.  His innovative contributions in different fields of applied and basic knowledge and his training labour have been extraordinary. Moreover, he has been a model whose way of being and performing deserves to be followed.

The book ‘Vicent Caselles. Matemàtica i Passió’ represents a tribute to a figure who determined the life of his relatives, friends, students, and anybody who keeps close to him. 

Caselles (Gatam 1960-2013) was interested in both problems directly related to very specific applications and basic problems in the theory of derivative and partial equations, when calculating variations and when focusing on the functional analysis.  He performed so-well in this area starting from a specific problem in order to propose an intelligent modelling and to spread a huge variety of theoretical and numerical tools to overcome them.  His works on geodesic snakes must be highlighted, an algorithm which today integrates a basic part of the image processing programme used daily by professionals in hospitals.
