The Universitat joins the Verdi Marathon of Les Arts with concerts and gastronomy

On the occasion of the Verdi Marathon de Les Arts, the Universitat de València and the Fundació General de la Universitat de València will carry out three projects in collaboration with this institution. The first of these was a concert on 3rd April, in the Auditorio de Les Arts Reina Sofía, by the Orquestra Filharmònica de la Universitat de València, in collaboration with the Conservatorio Superior de Música "Joaquín Rodrigo" de València and the University of Linköping (on the occasion of the MEETS project, co-financed by Erasmus+).

The concert included Symphony No. 2 in B minor by Aleksandr Borodin (1833-1887) and a selection of arias by Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901). This second part of the programme featured tenor Álvaro Diana, sopranos Ilona Matarazde and Saray García, baritone Óscar Velázquez and sopranist Rafael Quirant. Moreover, there was the participation of the students of the Master's Degree in Opera Performance from the Conservatorio Superior de Música "Joaquín Rodrigo" of Valencia, the students of the Linköping Academic Orchestra (LAO) of the University of Linköping and the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Universitat de València, conducted by Beatriz Fernández Aucejo.

The activity continued next week at the Universitat de València's La Nau Cultural Centre with a round table discussion on Wednesday 6th April on the figure of Verdi, where not only the musical aspects was discussed, but also an insight into the gastronomy and oenology of the northern Italian regions where the composer lived. The activity, which was organised by the Aula de Gastronomía of the Universitat, together with the Aula de Música and the Palau de Les Arts, was held at the Sapiència Chapel and included the participation of Anselmo Alonso, art historian, translator and technician in the area of dramaturgy at the Palau de Les Arts; Víctor Gil, head of educational projects at the Palau de Les Arts; Pablo Ministro, executive chef at the restaurant Contrapunto; Francisco Higón, lecturer in the Department of Applied Economics at the Universitat de València and Rosa Marín, head of the Aula de Gastronomía at the Universitat.

At the end of the round table, people enjoyed the concert Paráfrasis Verdi / Listz II, with pianists Jorge Balanzá and Carlos Apellániz, who performed works by G. Verdi, C. Gounod and R. Wagner.

The Verdi Marathon is a programme of activities that the Palau de Les Arts has programmed between 25th March and 10th April on the occasion of the performances of Verdi's Macbeth. It is a series of activities based on the figure of this Italian romantic opera composer, the aim of which is to make cultural activity more dynamic, with proposals inside and outside the building itself, ranging from educational to gastronomic, including concerts and recitals.
