The University gives out the awards of the 18th Biology Olympiad and the 12th Geology Olympiad

On Friday, April 16th, the University gave out the awards of the 18th Biology Olympiad and the 12th Geology Olympiad. The ceremony took place at 17:30 in the Charles Darwin Hall of the Aulari Interfacultatiu (Burjsassot-Paterna Campus) and was presided over by the vice-principal for Employment and Training Services, M. Adela Valero Aleixandre. Carmen Baño Aracil, dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences, and Mª Teresa Martínez Pastor, secretary of the Faculty of Biological Sciences, were also in attendance.

The Faculty of Biological Sciences and the Delegation for University Integration have organised this year’s 18th Biology Olympiad and 12th Geology Olympiad with the aim of encouraging the study of biological and geological sciences among young students, rewarding effort and academic excellence, disseminating both sciences and creating a meeting point for secondary education and the university.

In the province of Valencia alone, 96 biology students in their last year of upper secondary school from public and private centres participated in the 18th edition of the Biology Olympiad.

The winners of the Biology Olympiad of Valencia are:

Óscar Agustí Rubi, IES Benlliure; Jesús Martínez Aja, IES Maria Moliner; Álvaro Martínez Iranzo, CEU San Pablo; Lucia Ortiz Badenes, Colegio Mas Camarena; José Carlos Langa Serrano, IES Laurona; Adrián Berenguer Agustí, IES Benicalap; Pau Sabater Nácher, Colegio Nuestra Sra. de la Salud; Graciela Cortés Delgado, IES Joanot Martorell; Pedro Hernández Reverter, IES Maria Enriquez and Daniel Soler Castella, IES Pere Boil.

Óscar Agustí Rubi won the bronze medal in the National Phase of the Biology Olympiad, which was held online from the 11th to the 14th of March 2021. The 16th Spanish Biology Olympiad was organised by the University of the Basque Country.

The 12th edition of the Geology Olympiad was also held in the Faculty of Biology. 63 students in their first and second year of upper secondary school from public and private centres of the province of Valencia participated in the Olympiad. The exam took placeonline last February 12th.

The winners of the Geology Olympiad are:

David López Marí, IES Benicalap; Alba Mirón Martínez, IES Benicalap; Albert Sanmartín Lloret, IES San Vicente Ferrer and Celia Plana Benavent, IES Orriols. Moreover, Andrea Ortega Huerta, Carmen Pablo Palmero, Carlos Garay Gorrea and Samuel Arce Belmonte will receive a special mention for their excellent results.

The students who placed first, second and third in the local phase have participated as representatives of the Valencian Community in the 12th Spanish Geology Olympiad, which took place online on April 17th.

The University of Valencia will award a 1000€ study grant to the winning student. The grant will only come into effect if the winning student enrols in the first year of a degree from a University of Valencia centre.
