The reading of the manifesto and the concentration outside the Office of the Principal have been the institutional acts where the university community has vindicated women’s role in society as well as effective equality among men and women.

The University auditorium held the reading of the Network of Gender Equality Unities for University Excellence (RUIGEU) manifesto. The principal of the Universitat de València, M. Vicenta Mestre, was the one in charge of reading the text where women’s rights and equal opportunities among sexes are vindicated, along with Elena Martínez, Vice-Principal for Equality, Diversity and Sustainability; Amparo Mañés, Head of the Equality Unit, and a considerable number of vice-principals, deans and members of the university community. The analysis of the text is focused on the existing salary gap on public Spanish universities, just as the study made by the Spanish Ministry of Universities, the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA) and the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE) has proven. This way, the Equality Units’ vindications are focused on the amended inequalities and propose the implementation of gender studies and the mainstreaming of gender approach in the teaching, investigation, transfer and social commitment fields.

After that, the conference “Do men have a place on feminism?” was held by Miguel Lorente Acosta, professor of Forensic Medicine in the University of Granada and former Government Delegate for Gender Violence, and Àngela Escribano Martínez, Doctor of Law and consultant to the Government Office against Gender-based Violence at the Valencian Community.

Today, Tuesday, March 8th, the now traditional 5 minutes of silence outside the Office of the Principal have taken place. A large number of members from the different sectors of the university community have participated in the manifestation.

The events on the occasion of March 8 continue at the Universitat de València and will do so until the end of the month.
