The Universitat de València hosts on Monday 7 May a commemorative event of the 478th anniversary of the death of Joan Lluís Vives. The homage will take place at 12 hours at the auditorium of the Cultural Centre La Nau. The ceremony is organised by the Vice-Principal for Culture of the Universitat de València, Antonio Ariño, and the interventions of the members of Associació d’Amigues i Amics de Lluís Vives of the Universitat de València.

Moreover, in the event, two publications will be present: ‘El enigma de las Crónicas de Valencia desvelado’ of Francisco Calero, and ‘En busca del humanismo perdido.’ Studies about the work of Juan Luis Vives, of Jaime Vilarroig. At the end will be musical performances from the solo oboist of the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Universitat de València Álvaro Márquez. Admission to the hall is free until capacity is reached.

Joan Lluís Vives died in Bruges, on 6 May 1540. The sculpture was designed by José Azuela on request of the principal Josep Monserrat Riutort and, after a tough controversy with the conservative press, was set up in the centre of the Cloister of the Universitat in 1880. The solid statue was casted in bronzed in just one piece by the famous Vicente Ríos Enrique, a fact that constitutes a great technique feat for his time.

According to important university sources in different events, the Universitat de València is probably the only university in the world that has decided to preserve its more significant place for a student. Vives was a student at the Universitat de València, but he was not a professor of it.
