Public Art Exhibition for Young Creators

For the first time, within the framework of the Festival de Benvinguda of the Universitat de València, the Burjassot-Paterna Campus hosts The Public Art Exhibition for Young Creators, which will be held from 17 to 21 October. This year it will reach its 19th edition. The objective is to turn the university environment into a place of artistic intervention for society, making the young artists get involved in the welcome activities of the new academic year.

The 19th edition of ART PÚBLIC / UNIVERSITAT PÚBLICA - The Public Art Exhibition for Young Creators will be opened on Monday 17 October, at 12:30, in the Eduardo Boscá Library, where the facilities of the exhibition will be visited.

In the exhibition, which is organised by the Information and Dynamisation Service (Sedi) with the collaboration of the Vice-Principal for Culture and Equity, commissioned by Alba Braza, seven ephemeral artistic projects participate this year.

Selected artists
‘Equal Passes’, of Myriam Moreno
The ‘Equal Passes’ enables a metaphorical access to different spaces of equity and to have, during that time, a series of privileges which are not always given to women for their condition of being women. They expect to be a wake-up call to act as radars to identify the daily micro male chauvinisms.

‘Equal Passes’ comes from the idea of a committed and demanding jewel. It is a jewel or a corporal decoration which can be understood from the construction of oneself and from the perspective and provocation on the other. With these ornamentations, people communicate who they are and which place they occupy in society.

‘Trompe-l’oeil’, of Laura Palau
It is the illusion of the artifice, a figure that enables the hallucination by appearance. This figure includes a metaphysical part: what can be seen is less clear than what is secret.

This work wants to explore the relationship between the representational space and the physical space. An area of tension is tried to be found, where it could be possible to experiment and at the same time to bring to light the problems of representation and gaze .

‘Encara esperem’ (We are still waiting), of Rubén Martín
‘Encara esperem’ reproduces the illusory welcome scene of the refugees who come from Syria and other countries of the East. They are refugees who were supposed to be welcomed by the Government, but, after the polemic agreement between the European Union with Turkey, that seems to be more and more complicated. That is why the elements used in this work are badly placed, disordered or deflated, with which the author wants to highlight the disappointment felt due to this agreement.

‘QB Colors’, of Gemma Alpuente and María Martínez (Group Emerge)
‘QB Colors’ is a work of art which consists of a cube and a colour spot placed in a higher area close to it. The objective is to establish a dialogue between both interventions to involve the audience. This way, this spot of colour can be observed through a window’s opening in the wall of the cube. From this strategical point, the audience can see the potential unit of this work of art, which is a metaphor of the acquisition of academic knowledge by the individual.

‘Lectura profunda’ (Deep reading), of Maria Vidagañ
‘Lectura profunda’ addresses the necessity of having time to elaborate deep thoughts; it is the antithesis of the disproportionate low-quality productivity; and the urgency to build spaces of reflection, appeasement and rest.

Guest artists
‘12 m² de estabilidad’ (12m² of stability), of Natalia Domínguez
With this project, 64 construction supports placed in one of the external galleries of the Campus reach 12 square meters of passable public space. They are 64 supports which separate the floor from the ceiling and make clear the architecture which they support in a visible way, modified in its state as well as in its relationship with the passer-by.

Since it occupies a space with elements of construction which have been conceived to prevent the collapse of a building, its stability is reinforced. In addition, a possible necessity of sustenance is considered and its functionality is conditioned. Ultimately, ‘12 m² de estabilidad’ wants to play with the concepts of occupation and spatial sustainability so as to suggest how their alterations affect their conception and meaning.

‘Paisaje de la tierra’ (Landscape of the earth), of d’Ismael Teira
Constituted as institutions of higher education, universities try to answer the questions which cause concern for the human being in all disciplines of knowledge by knowing how the world functions in order to try to improve it. It could be said that everything is prone to harmony.

There is another type of popular wisdom which also tries to answer the ultimate reason of this harmony. This is the case of this traditional Galician song, a popular cosmogony orally transmitted which covers a series of antagonisms to generate a vision of a permanently harmonious earth. ‘Paisaje de la tierra’ reproduces the phonetic transcription of the song recited by the artist’s grandmother.
