On 26, 27 and 28 of May around 200 experts in the intervention of this phenomenon met to present the most significant advances achieved in child to parent violence in recent years, as well as as to reflect about the challenges of the future.

The Spanish Society for the Study of Child to Parent Violence (SEVIFIP) celebrated the “III National Congress on Child to Parent Violence: advances and challenges” during the 26, 27 and 28 of May at the Cultural Centre La Nau of the Universitat de València.

According to the data published by the Memoria de la Fiscalía General del Estado, there were 4,699 cases opened against young people for child to parent violence in 2020 (last year with published data).

The Valencian Community is the second community in Spain with more registered cases after Andalucía. 830 cases were opened for this crime in 2020. Breaking down the data by providence, 478 were registered in València, 302 in Alicante and 50 in Castelló.

“Within the last 20 years there have been many advances. Even though this still is an invisible problem its gaining visibility, and society is becoming more aware of this type of problem. Now we have intervention programmes specialized in child to parent violence and this is a huge step forward in hepling families and young people. We can also state that now there is an agreement among the professionals that it is a relational problem, that is necessary to work with the families and to involve the parents. It is also important to point out that at the beginning the phenomenon was only considered to be tackled from the judicial sphere and now the focus is on prevention and awareness”, María José Ridaura, vice-president of SEVIFIP and psychologist at Fundación Amigó, said.

“Now we know many things about child to parent violence, about its characteristics, causes, and how we can intervene in an appropriate way. We have agreed on a definition of child to parent violence so that the investigations have a common starting point for research. Some autonomous communities have many resources and others very few, one of the challenges is that all the regions have resources to intervene in this type of violence said Roberto Pereira, honorary president of SEVIFIP.

The III National Congress on Child to Parent Violence has counted with the intervention of María Vicenta Mestre, rector of thr Universitat de València with the opening speech Enfoque multidisciplinar de la violencia filio-parental and Roberto Pereira, honorary president of SEVIFIP, with the closing speech La VFP en la tercera década del siglo XXI: desafíos y propuestas. Likewise, 8 different round tables and more than 20 communications were held with the participation of renowned professionals in the field of tackling this phenomenon.
