In the plenary talk, Juli Pausas, scientist at the Desertification Research Centre (CIDE), a mixed entity of the University of Valencia, the Higher Council for Scientific Research and the Valencian Government, presented research on the impact of ecological disturbances on the biodiversity. Among others, the full professor of Microbiology and Ecology Antonio Camacho analysed how wetlands can mitigate climate change; researcher Patricia Moya discussed the deterioration of lichens and microalgae in the Valencian Community; and researcher Irene Estellés analysed the impact of wind farms on birds of prey.

“We are celebrating 25 years with a staff of around a hundred researchers who work on current issues about global change, biodiversity and evolution”, highlights Joaquín Baixeras, director of ICBiBE. Among the main milestones that occurred, managing to consolidate this scientific day, which this year reaches its seventh edition; remain at the forefront of Spanish research in Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology; and work on up to twelve lines of research.

The Cavanilles Institute of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology (ICBiBE) was founded in 1998 and its name recovered one of the key naturalists in the history of Valencian science, the botanist Antoni Josep Cavanilles. It is dedicated to the study of biodiversity and evolutionary biology with an integrative and multidisciplinary approach from basic science. Its research staff is divided between the Science Park headquarters and also the Faculty of Biological Sciences and the Botanical Garden of the UV.

The institute’s research focuses on the following areas: Biodiversity and evolution of cnidarians; Plant Biodiversity; Ecophysiology; Plant conservation biology; Paleobiology and theoretical biology (Theoretical biology); Ecology of terrestrial vertebrates; Entomology and pest control; Evolutionary Ecology; Molecular and organismic evolution of plants; Limnology; Comparative Neurobiology; Ethology; Paleobiology and theoretical biology (Paleobiology) and Marine zoology.
