The ConèixerUV Information Day addresses the influence of the "culture of romance" in pre-university careers

Almost three hundred people, including guidance professionals and members of secondary school management teams, attended the 28th Information Day of the “Conèixer la Universitat” programme held on 31 January in the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of the Universitat de València. Mar Venegas, specialist in Sociology of Education, Gender and Sexuality and Equal Opportunities, gave the main lecture on how the "culture of romance" affects the trajectories of secondary school students.

The principal of the Universitat de València, M. Vicenta Mestre, welcomed the public attending the conference, defending the need to "guide students who live with uncertainty and insecurity" to guide them to a future "where they feel fulfilled people", from the responsibility and commitment to "train people who will lead the future". The principal took the opportunity to vindicate the "essential" task of guidance professionals and thanked them for attending a conference that aims to contribute to transferring from the university to society the research carried out in this area.

Mar Venegas, professor in the Department of Sociology and Vice-Principal of Equality, Inclusion and Social Commitment of the University of Granada, then gave the conference Orienting for equality: educating affective-sexual relationships in secondary school. Venegas shared her research on how the "culture of romance", with dimensions such as partners, friendships, social networks and references, pornography, etc., is configured as a space that affects academic trajectories in the pre-university stage, with a more intense effect in the case of teen girls. The professor and expert in gender and sexuality pointed out the need to pay attention to the impact of these issues on studies and to have comprehensive sexual education programmes that cover the information needs of adolescents and counteract the impact that the "culture of romance" has on their academic trajectories.

Afterwards, Isabel Vázquez, vice-principal of Studies, moderated the panel discussion of experiences Degrees to be discovered at the Universitat de València. The following people have participated, explaining the main ideas of different degrees and the students experience: Vicent Rosell, professor of the degree in Speech Therapy and director of the Speech Therapy Clinic of the UV, and Marta Terol, student of the degree in Speech Therapy; M. Amparo Díez, professor of the degree in Optics and Optometry and vice-dean of the Faculty of Physics, and Violeta Báguena, student of the degree in Optics and Optometry; Rubén Arnandis, professor and coordinator of the degree in Tourism, and Yaiza Ward García, student of the degree in Tourism.

During the conference, Baula, the pilot programme to accompany first-year students at the Universitat de València, was also presented. Alícia Villar, professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology and delegate of the principal for Academic Trajectories of the UV, explained the objectives of Baula and the need to add this resource of accompaniment at the beginning of the university career to reinforce the incorporation and the link with the studies and university life.

Finally, to close the 28th Information Day, Antoni Gil, general coordinator of the university entrance exams of the Valencian University System, addressed the situation of the 2024 university entrance exams and advanced some of the key issues that will be taken into account for the 2025 exams. Accompanied by Isabel Vázquez, he answered the attendees' questions on these issues.

The recording of the 28th Information Day will soon be available on the website of the Conèixer la Universitat 2024 programme. This activity starts this year's edition of the programme, which also includes the Visits to the Universitat, from 19 to 29 February, with the option of visiting the Ontinyent campus for the first time and the information session on admission and enrolment at the UV to be held in June.

Conèixer la Universitat is a programme of the Office of the Vice-Principal of Studies that coordinates the Information and Promotion Service for Students (Sedi) and that counts with the participation of the centres and services of the Universitat de València.
