Two Valencian students win the gold medal in the national phase of the Biology and Geology Olympiads

The Valencian students José M. Pérez Garrigues and Miguel Barea Fernández, winners of the local phase of the 2016-2017 Biology and Geology Olympiads respectively, have obtained the gold medal at the national phases of each competition. Furthermore, the ceremony award was held on Friday 7 April and the prizes were awarded to the winners of the 14th Biology Olympiad and 8th Geology Olympiad organised by the Universitat de València.

The national phases of the Biology and Geology Olympiads were taken place in Pamplona and Salamanca during March. Regarding the ceremony award, it was held at sala Charles Darwin of the Aulari Interfacultatiu in Burjassot Campus of the Universitat de València with the attendance of Isabel Vázquez, Vice-Principal for Undergraduate Studies and Language Policy; Javier Lluch, dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences; José Pertusa, Vice-Dean of Studies of the faculty; Miguel V.Pardo, coordinator of the Geology Olympiad; and María José Lorente, coordinator of the Biology Olympiad and delegate of the Principal for the Incorporation to the UV. 

The winners of the Biology Olympiad in Valencia are José M. Pérez Garrigues, from Colegio Sant Vicente Ferrer – P. Dominicos (Valencia); Azucena Molina Solís, from IES Lluís Vives (Valencia); Álex Bautista Galiana, from Colegio Pureza de María (Ontinyent); Javier Ferri Beneito, from IES Cabanyal (Valencia); Francisco Javier Miquel Leal, from IES Pere Boïl (Manises); Elena Matas López, from Colegio Mas Camarena (Paterna); Jara Montero Muñoz, from IES Pere d’Esplugues (la Pobla Llarga); Guillermo Villanueva Real, from Colegio Salesianos San Juan Bosco (Valencia); Paula Guillamón Gil, from IES número 1 (Requena); and Maria Colomina Martínez, from Colegio Martí Sorolla II (Valencia).

Furthermore, José M. Pérez Garrigues, Azucena Molina Solís and Álex Bautista Galiana have taken part as representatives of the Region of Valencia in the 12th National Biology Olympiad that was held in Pamplona between 23 and 26 March 2017. The national competition awards four gold medals and four silver ones. The first gold medal went to José M. Pérez Garrigues, so he will be part of the team that will represent Spain in the 28th International Biology Olympiad. It will take place from 23 to 30 July in Coventry (United Kingdom). 

Geology
The winners of the 8th Geology Olympiad are Miguel Barea Fernández, from IES Tirant lo Blanc (Gandia); Víctor Camús Hernández and Jaime José Merenciano San Andrés, both from IES Benicalap (Valencia). The three students participated in the VIII National Phase of the Geology Olympiad that was held in Salamanca between 31 March and 2 April 2017. In this case, Miguel Barea Fernández received the gold medal in the competition and he will represent Spain in the international phase of Geology Olympiad (from 22 to 29 August in Niza, France).  

Prizes
The prize awarded to the winners of the 14th Biology Olympiad and the 8th Geology Olympiad consist of a sum of 1,000 € for the students who are enrolled in any undergraduate degree of the Universitat de València. In this 14th edition of the Bilogy Olympiad, only in the Region of Valencia have participated a total of 229 high school students of Bachillerato, whereas in the 8th edition of Geology Olympiad, only 141 students of first and second year of Bachillerato of public and private schools of Valencia have taken part in this event.

The Faculty of Biological Sciences and the Delegation for University Integration have organised this year the 14th Biology Olympiad and the 8th Geology Olympiad with the aim of stimulating the study of biological and geological sciences among teenagers, rewarding the effort and academic excellence, disseminating both sciences and acting as a meeting point between the secondary teaching and the university.
