Equip jugant a frisbee

A mixed-gender, no physical contact team sport without a referee, in which sportsmanship and fair play are central themes. If you have yet to opt for an activity this school year or if you want to learn a new sport, there is still time to register for Ultimate Frisbee at the Blasco Ibañez Campus of the UV.

Ultimate Frisbee is one of the many sports offerings at the Universitat de València. We spoke with coach Dalila Fuentes to learn a bit more about this sport.

  • What physical conditions are required to play Ultimate Frisbee?

None in particular. While it is true that it’s advantageous to be quick, each position has its own unique set of demands, and progressive improvements can always be made, even if you come from a rather sedentary lifestyle. The team environment is great -- we start with the basics each year and every member has the opportunity to evolve and progress throughout the year.

  • What are the dynamics of a game without referees?

Communication is essential as well as fair play. In the end, it’s very natural, we all try not to commit fouls because everyone on the field knows the rules and can apply them. There’s room on the team for everyone to have their say. After team practices we usually dedicate a few minutes to feedback so that everyone can share their ideas and their experience of the team dynamics. Following the games, we do something called a ‘Spirit Circle’ with the other team, where we all comment on the game and talk about how it went, ranking items such as knowledge of the game, rule-following, positive attitude, fouls, etc..

  • What would you tell someone who was thinking about signing up?

I would say, with or without experience, they should sign up, without hesitation. It’s such an inclusive sport, played outdoors in the fresh air, with a great atmosphere both on and off the field. They would have a great time. We also participate in other activities outside of training on the Blasco Ibañez Campus. We play friendly games on the beach with other teams; there are always people who want to get together and play. We also participate in the Autonomous University Ultimate Frisbee Championships.
