Under the motto ‘40 years of social university effectiveness’ a new edition of the Universitat d’Estiu of Gandia (UEG) has been presented. It will carry out in the city from 7 to 14 July. The main novelty of this year: the seminars will grant recognition of university microcredentials.

The mayor of Gandia, José Manuel Prieto; the vicerector of Culture of the University of Valencia, Ester Alba; the academic director of the CIG-UV, Joan del Alcázar; and the manager of Culture, Nahuel Gonzáles, presented in a press conference a new edition of the UEG, which commemorate the four decades of history of the dean of the valencian summer universities.

Under the motto ‘40 years of social university effectiveness’, the mayor explained that “the edition of this year offers seminars, tables, workshops, and activities open to people that will analyse broadly the knowledge that constitute the teaching, the investigation and the transfer that the university offers to society, from methaphysics to robotics”.  He added, “it is about an anual celebration that enriches us and turns us into a cultural capital and a university capital, (that we have been for centuries), and into the spotlight and example for other cities.

This is a special edition, acoording to the vicerector Ester Alba, “that is a glance to the past, but it also suggests the need to look to the future”. Therefore, the vicerector announced that this edition of the UEG will have the recognition of university microredentials that are “a professional update with recognition in the european university space”.

Seminars with microcredentials
Joan del Alcàzar, academic director of the CIG-UV, presented the content of the edition. This UEG includes a formative offer with 12 seminars, three for every macro area of knowledge: humanities, social and legal sciences, healthcare and basic and technological sciences. A varied programme that includes seminars that go from asian studies to renewable energies, Big Data, the postmemory of franquism, astrobiology or autonomic financing.

This year’s offer stands for a “way of pressional update for those with or without a university degree that are interested in enriching their curriculum”.   The seminars of the UEG are recognised with university microcredentials. Ten hours of formation correspond to one ECTS credit point or one university microcredential. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that the CEFIRE of Gandia recognises as a formation for the teaching staff 9 of the 12 programmed seminars.

The registration for the seminars will start May 22 on the website of the Universitat d’Estiu of Gandia: www.uv.es/ueg.

Open activities
The programme of the Universitat d’Estiu includes, as usual, a series of acts open to everyone. The inauguration will be Friday 7 July. At 7 p.m., at the Casa de la Marquesa, an exhibition that goes over the history of the four decades of the UEG will be inaugurated. Then, at 8 p.m. the inaugural conference ‘Paradigm of the social university effectiveness’ will take place, supervised by Anna Lluch.

From Monday 10, the round tables and evening conferences will start.  The same Monday, the journalist Enric Juliana will be in charge of the partisanship of justice; on Tuesday 11, the political scientist and philosopher, Sami Naïr returns to the UEG to speak about migratory movements in the Mediterranean sea; on Wednesday 12, will be the time to speak about Russia with the excorrespondent from El País, Pilar Bonet. An act organised by the Càtedra Alfons Cucò. On Thursday 13, the topic of mental health will be discussed with a round table moderated by Javier Velasco, in which Belén Hernández Zoido, clinical psychologist, and José Cervera, psychiatrist at the Hospital of Gandia, will participate. The evening activities will conclude on Friday 14 with the intervention of the journalist Jesús Maraña, who is going to speak about ‘sewer journalism’. The conferences and the round tables will commence at 7:30 p.m. in the Assembly Hall of the Casa de la Marquesa.

Also at the Marquesa, but in the garden at 9:30 p.m. will take place the programme of ‘Les nits al jardí’, an offer that, according to Naguel Gonzàles, manager of Culture, it has become a model of valencian music. The programme wil start with the Big Band Benimaclet on Monday 10. On Tuesday 11 and Wednesday 12, the “main course” of the edition has been programmed with the performances of Xavi Sarriá and Marala. According to Nahuel Gonzáles, they are two models, “Sarrià represents the start of the valencian music consolidation, while Marala is currently the most important group of women in the music of our language”. This way, it complements the offer for the youngest public that will take place from Thursday in Gandia with el Pirata. On thursday 13, the final act of the programme Emergents will take place, while on Friday 14, the stage of the UEG will receive a classic: the theatre of Escena Erasmus.

Also, the manager González announced that the wide cultural offer of the UEG will complement with a second exposition at the Tossal hall, starring illustrators from Gandia that will reflect on the 40 years of this university city through their work.

The Language Centre presents an offer in Gandia
Another novelty that will take place this summer - and that was announced this Wednesday - is the offer of the Language Centre to the city, “a complementary offer that comes to enrich the new stage started by the International Centre of Gandia”, said the vicerector Ester Alba. Two intensive english courses will be offered in July, aimed to the acquisition of the B1 and the C1. The courses will last 30 hours that will end with an exam of certification of Cambridge. Namely, they facilitate the student to finish the course obtaining the corresponding degree. The complete information about this courses offer will be offered the next weeks.
