The Lise Meitner Hall of the Faculty of Physics has hosted this Thursday from 6 pm the award ceremony of the XXXIII Physics Olympiad to secondary school students who have participated in the local phase and, therefore, will access to the state phase of the competition and will also have a bonus of 1,000 euros in the enrolment of the first year of degree in any degree of the Universitat de València.

The group of award-winning students are: Nicolás Iserte Tarazón (Escuelas profesionales Luis Amigó de Godella), Sergio Garrido Bourkhaeva (El Plantío Int. School de Paterna), Pablo Faus Faus (IES María Enríquez de Gandía), Joel Parra Sánchez (IES Isabel de Villena de València), Felipe Campos Aprigio (IES Joan Fuster de Sueca) and Mateo Tabernero Fuentes (IES Pere Boïll de Manises). The first four runners-up will pass to the national phase of the competition as starters and the next two as substitutes.

At the event, held in the afternoon in the Lise Meitner Hall of the Faculty of Physics of the Universitat de Valencia, the distinctions were presented by the principal's delegate for university incorporation, Mª José Lorente, representing the vice-principal for Employment and Training Programmes of the UV, Adela Valero; the dean of the Faculty of Physics, Jordi Vidal; the vice-president of the Spanish Royal Society of Physics (RSEF), Miguel Ángel Sanchis; and Ester Giménez Carbó, director of Students, Performance and Curricular Assessment on behalf of the Vice-principal for Students and Entrepreneurship of the UPV. The local organising committee of the Olympiad of both universities, formed by Chantal Ferrer (UV), Mª Jesús Hernández (UV) and Juan Carlos Carrión (UPV), and a representation of the teaching staff of the course also participated.

The Physics Olympiad is an international competition in which students from many countries participate and which is organised by the RSEF in its national phase. The UV, through the Faculty of Physics and the Delegation for University Entrance, as well as the UPV, are in charge of the local phase of the competition, which took place on 24th February and consists of a written test of physics problems and exercises.

The bachillerato students who participated in this test were eligible for local prizes, which include €1,000 for students who enrol at the Universitat de València in the next two years, among others. In addition, these students can extend their participation in the national phase of the Olympiad, which this year, as in the previous two years, will be non-attendance-based, as well as in the XVII Ibero-American phase (Guatemala) and the 52nd international competition (Belarus).

The local phase of the Olympiad began with a preliminary test held last October, in which 104 students participated, from which 22 were selected, who received a physics course of more than 70 hours taught by professors from the two universities, UV and UPV, prior to the local test of the competition.
