The University of Valencia hosts the World Meteorological Day in the Valencian Community

Under the title “At the forefront of climate action”, the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and the Government of Spain, in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organisation and the University of Valencia, organise on Thursday, March 21, the World Meteorological Day in the Valencian Community. The event, in the assembly hall of the Rectorate building, will take place at 12 noon and, on behalf of the University of Valencia, Rosa Donat, vice-rector of Transfer and Innovation, together with the Government sub-delegate at the Valencian Community, José Rodríguez Jurado, will participate.

Thus, at 12:15 p.m., they will deliver diplomas to the AEMET Agency collaborators who have been awarded, who are Vicente Micó Navarro, observer from Villena (La Vereda); José Andrés Agulló Verduzco, observer from Elche; Ginés García Montalbán, observer from Callosa d’en Sarrià; Francisco Valverde Tamayo, observer from Beniatjar (Les Planisses); Bernardo González Faus, observer from Carcaixent; i José Asins Magraner, Silla observer.

At 12:30 p.m. the conference “Estimation of the Earth’s surface temperature from satellite” will take place, given by the professor of Earth Physics at the University of Valencia and Jaime I Award winner for Environmental Protection, José Antonio Sobrino Rodríguez. Next, AEMET Delegation staff retired during 2022-2023 will be recognised.

World Meteorological Day is celebrated as the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) reaches its 151st anniversary. During this period, the entity has shared information with the national Meteorological and Hydrological Services, which has allowed the collection and standardisation of this data that supports current weather forecasts.

In the Valencian Community, the social presence of the Meteorological Service has been constant since the creation of the observatories of Valencia and Alicante in 1859. The climatological observation network extended the presence of the AEMET to a large number of towns in the Community since 1911.
