THE University Impact Rankings, an international classification that measures the performance of universities in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations (ODS), places the University of Valencia (UV) among the 200 best in the world and among the first eight Spanish universities. As outstanding individual objectives, the academic institution ranks 17th in the world in Objective 4, Education; or 21 in objective 10, reduce inequality between countries and within them.

On September 25, 2015, the UN adopted a set of global goals to eradicate poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity as part of the 2030 Agenda. This includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals and each of They contain specific goals. In this classification, out of 1,591 institutions around the world, the University of Valencia stands out particularly in objective 12 (sustainable production and consumption), where it occupies position 51 in the scale for specific objectives.

The institution is also among the top 200 universities in the world in 9 of the 17 goals, which are ending poverty (goal 1), hunger and food security (2), health (3), gender equality and women’s empowerment (5), water and sanitation (6), economic growth (8), cities (11), oceans (14), and peace and justice (16).

“The University has made a great effort to promote the consumption of healthy and local products with the implementation of three sustainable markets and a responsible basket system. In this way, a healthy food supply is guaranteed, local producers who use environmentally friendly techniques are supported, and the use of single-use packaging and the carbon footprint are reduced. In addition, there are several services that are working intensively and collaboratively to improve the healthy offer at the campus catering points and to reduce the resulting organic and plastic waste. This is what puts us in the lead, of course, in the fulfillment of objective 12, but it also pushes us, with the rest of the initiatives, to pave the way in the fulfillment of the ODS”, highlights Pilar Serra, vice-rector of Sustainability, Cooperation and Healthy Life of the UV.

For her part, Helena Rausell, vice-rector of Equality, Diversity and Inclusive Policies points out that the UV “has always been committed to building an equitable university, with equality between men and women and with respect for affective-sexual, family and gender diversity, ethno-cultural and religious. This is shown by the fact that we have one of the Equality Units with the longest history in our country, the adoption of successive Equality Plans, the existence of protocols against harassment and different forms of violence or the awards to the research carried out by our students with a gender perspective and from the perspective of diversity or care for people with disabilities”.

In the case of the position among Valencian universities in THE University Impact Rankings, the UV is in the 1-2 range, with the Polytechnic of Valencia. On a Spanish scale, the first centres, according to this classification, are for the University of Murcia, the Rovira i Virgili of Girona, the University of Valencia, the University of Girona or the University of Jaén, up to a total of eight centres that share the first place [1-8] with a world position of [101-200]. Western Sydney University in Australia, the University of Manchester (United Kingdom) and Queen's University (Canada) are in the global classification of this ranking.
