La ciutat monstre: homenatge a Sanchís Guarner
The Gregori Maians Social Sciences Library hosts the piece “The Monster City: Homage to Sanchís Guarner”, a 3-meter-diameter wooden model representing the historic center of Valencia. It highlights 41 heritage buildings, some of which are photographed and demolished between 1940 and 1980.
This piece was first presented at the exhibition “Valencia 1972: Towards the Monster City”, held at the La Nau Cultural Center in 2022, in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Manuel Sanchis Guarner’s book The City of Valencia. A Synthesis of History and Urban Geography.
The exhibition reflected on urban evolution and the lack of protection of heritage during the Franco regime, a time when architectural renovation and urban reforms led to the destruction of numerous historic buildings, both traditional and modern. This model is a faithful and critical representation of it.

International human rights law establishes a fundamental normative framework for the protection of human dignity worldwide. However, its application varies significantly between regions, reflecting historical, political and legal differences.
This International Seminar aims to address this problem and work to foster closer collaboration between the two regions, as well as the need to strengthen Latin American institutions to ensure more effective protection of human rights.
The Seminar will include the participation of Fabián Salvioli, former Chair of the Human Rights Committee and former United Nations Rapporteur on the Right to Truth, Justice, Reparation and Guarantees of Non-Repetition, and other prominent national and international speakers.
