An online webinar presents this Friday 17 at 12 m. the main conclusions of the report of the IBERIFIER project on the impact of disinformation in the media industry in Spain, here as a map of digital media. IBERIFIER is a digital media observatory in Spain and Portugal promoted by the European Commission and linked to the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO).

The project is directed by the University of Navarra and integrated by twelve universities, including the University of Valencia (UV), five verification organisations and news agencies and six multidisciplinary research centres. The report is coordinated by Carolina Moreno, full professor of journalism at the UV, together with Miguel Paisana, researcher at the Communication Observatory (OberCom) and it analyses the opinions of citizens.

The webinar will be moderated by Clara Tosar and will be attended by Carolina Moreno, who presents the report on disinformation on which she has been working for months, and the full professor of Journalism at the University of Navarra Ramón Salaverría, coordinator of the IBERIFIER project, who presents the Digital media map of Spain and Portugal.

The data show that both countries trust the health institutions and will achieve high rates of full vaccination among all population groups, especially the elderly and the most vulnerable. The respondents in Portugal and Spain trusted more in research and scientific staff but also journalists and medical staff. However, in Spain citizens are more sceptical about media paywalls and also if they prevent the spread of fake news.

In Portugal, the people surveyed showed a greater concern for disinformation in politics than among family, friends, or colleagues. In Spain, gender influences the loss of trust in the media that publish fake news, while the degree of trust in the media depends on the political party they vote for. In case of confirming the importance of the verification procedures, the media editors of both countries agreed on their importance.

The report also suggests various solutions to combat disinformation, such as investing in media literacy programs, regulating online sources of disinformation and promoting transparency and accuracy in reporting.
