The Universitat de València added to the celebration of the International Romani Day this 8 April. This day commemorates the First World Romani Congress celebrated in London in 1971, in which the Romani flag and hymn were established. This day was set in order to make the reality and history of these people known and to assert the Romani culture. To appreciate the Romani culture and to commemoreate this celebration, photos and videos of the project A QUELAR! CABANYAL 2019 will be shared on the social networks of the initiative Diversitats of the Universitat.

From the initiative diversitats, fostered by the Office of the Vice-Principal for Equality, Diversity and Sustainability, people work for the integration of all people who are part of the university community, including the Romani students. Only 2% of the Romani population reaches the university level, and most of them are women (more than 80%), in accordance with data provided by the Fundación Secretariado Gitano (FSG).

According to Diagnóstico en materia de diversidad LGTBI y étnicocultural entre el alumnado de la Universidad (Study in matters of LGBTI and ethnocultural diversity in the student body of the University), carried out by the research team MIDICO in 2019, a part of the Romani student body is "invisible" and do not consider necessary, convenient or relevant to present themselves as Romani in their environment. Despite the fact that the university environment is considered to be an inclusive environment, they report surprising situations due to the fact that they are Romani - comments such as "You don't look like a gypsy" - or in a more minoritarian way, openly xenophobic comments combining the generalisation of negative or illegal practices of gypsies to the whole collective.

According to the interviewed people, the situation and culture of the Romani people "is invisible, it does not exist", in the different dimensions of university life. The gypsity is also absent in curricular contents and when it becomes visible, it is used as a tool for illustrating social problems, such as the early school dropouts or criminal behaviours like drug trafficking.

For this reason, the Office of the Vice-Principal is conscious that there are many things to do in order that nobody is left behind. The Universitat, through diversitats, programmes training and awareness activities, such as the Discussion held last year or the 'Diversity, Performing Arts and Management' conferences, co-organised with the student body from the Faculty of Economics, where the project A QUELAR! CABANYAL was presented. The 2019 activity report can be consulted here.

A QUELAR! CABANYAL, of the Extremus Danza company, directed by Eva Moreno and the cultural association "La Calle Baila", has provided more than forty children, mainly of Romani ethnicity, with free training in a continuous programme of flamenco dance, box-drum, guitar, singing and saxophone. It has also participated in shows with great figures of flamenco. The main objective of this project is to encourage the inclusion and development of the Romani people, whilst respecting their culture and engaging the rest of the neighbours and the city as a whole. To appreciate the Romani culture and to commemoreate this celebration, photos and videos of the project will be shared on the social networks of the initiative diversitats.
