The University of Valencia (UV) and the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) have awarded this Tuesday, March 3, the high school students who have participated in the local phase of the XXXI Physics Olympics and, therefore, will access the state stage of the competition (in April, in Murcia), they will also have a bonus of 1,000 euros in the enrolment of the first degree course in any degree from the University of Valencia.

The awarded students are. Leonardo Costa (IES Pere Boïll, Manises), Javier López (CS José de Calasanz, Valencia), Adrián Lambíes (C Sº Corazón HH Maristas, Valencia), Joan Torregrosa (IES María Enríquez), Darian Leucian (C. Internacional de Levante) and Alonso Císcar (Cumbres School). The top four will wualify for the national phase of the competition.

At the event, held in the afternoon at the Polytechnic University, the awards were given by the rector’s delegate for University Integration, Mª José Lorente, on behalf of the UV’s Vice-Rector for Employment and Training Programs, Adela Valero; the dean of the Faculty of Physics, Jordi Vidal; the president of the local section of the Spanish Royal Society of Physics (RSEF), Ana Cros and the vice-rector of Students, Culture and Sport of the UPV, José Luis Cueto. The local organising committee of the Olympic Games of both universities, consisting of Chantal Ferrer (UV), Fernando Tena (UV) and Juan Carlos Carrión (UPV), and a representation of the course’s teachers also participated.

The Physics Olympics is an international competition that involves students from numerous countries and is organised by the RSEF in its national phase. The UV – through the Faculty of Physics and the Delegation for University Integration – as well as the UPV, are in charge of the local phase of the competition, which took place on February 27 and consists of a written test of Physics problems and exercises.

The baccalaureate students who participated in this test opted for the local prizes, which include € 1,000 to the students who enrol in the University of Valencia in the next two years, among others. In addition, this student may extend their participation in the national phase of the Olympics (Murcia, April 23-26), in the Latin American phase (Brazil, in September), and the 51st international call (Vilnius, Lithuania July 18-26).

The local phase of the Olympics began with a preliminary test held last October, in which the first participants were selected, around 60 students, who received a 70-hour physics course taught by teachers from both universities, prior to the local competition test. Since this year and due to a global reduction in the number of students qualifying nationally, only four high school students in each area are passing the national stage.
