The Historical Library has the bibliographical tools needed for the librarian, first to carry out the proper technical processing of funds and the information for the user and researcher and second to explore and study the material, which he consults.
For technical processing and study of the ancient collection there are general and regional encyclopaedias, linguistic

dictionaries and of various thematic also, general bibliographies, national or specialized, bio-bibliographies, biographical data of illustrators, printers, printing locations, typographical brands, Ex-libris, authors grouped under different concepts, monographs on printing in many places and times, catalogues of libraries, collectives, etc.

We have, obviously, many reference works and Valencian works such as Aguilo and Fuster, Justo Pastor Fuster, Genovés Olmos, Martí Grajales, Ribelles Común, Serrano Morales, Ximeno, etc. and just to name a few. Regarding to periodical publications that of Navarro Cabanes, Tramoyeres, Blasco, etc.

It form part of our own bibliographic heritage (as in most historical libraries) some emblematic works from the 15th and 19th centuries, which are significant within the history of bibliography and reference, as for example:

  • General Bibliographies: “Bibiotheca Universalis” by Conrad Gesnes, 1545, the “Bibliographia critica, sacra et prophane” by Miguel de San José, 1740-42, or the work by J.C. Brunet “Manuel du libraire et de l’amateur de livres”, 1860-80.
  • The National bibliography by Nicolás Antonio Bibliotheca Hispana Nova 1672 and Bibliotheca Hispana Vetus, 1696, as well as the publications by Ibarra of the 18th century.
  • The specialised bibliographies by Johannes Trithemius De scriptoribus ecclesiastics liber publications of 1512 and 1546, the work by the Jesuit Ribadeneira “Bibliotheca scriptorium Societatis lesu” , publication of 1676, or the one by Jacques Quetif “Scriptores Ordinis Praedicatorum” of 1719-21.
  • The great collection, “Acta sanctorum” by Jean Bolland, begun to be published in 1643 or the bio-bibliography “Biographie universelle, ancienne et modern” edited by Michaud in 1811-53.
  • Language dictionaries, as the one by Sebastian de Covarrubias Tesoro de la lengua castellana o española, 1611, the Dictionary of Authorities, 1732, by Esteban Terreros y Pando, Diccionario castellano con las voces de ciencias y artes…, 1786-93 or the thematic dictionary Le gran dictionnaire historique by Louis Moreri, the 2nd and 4th edition, 1681 and 1687.
  • The 35 volumes of the Encyclopédie ou dictionnaire raisonné des Sciences, des Arts et des Métiers… by Diderot, 1751-77, etc.

Some of the reference works of the Library are located in the ground floor, in open access, although only the consult of the works more general and that are not part of the ancient collection. Furthermore, it can be located all reference works in the computerised catalogue “trobes” of the University of Valencia.
